Jan 2006 Rhinoceros Conservation Fund, US Fish & Wildlife Services
The 2005 Congressional appropriation was over 1 million. Besides aiding rhinos these funds also aided 41 add’l rhino & tiger conservation projects. One of the projects educated school children and adults about the plight of the rhino. The purchase of a well equipped vehicle for travel, allowed these people living in the outreach areas to learn, as well as those living nearby the black rhino population.
Second project helped to re-introduce white rhino to Uganda. With staff training, education programs brought to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. All supported by these improvements.
Third project Due to many emergency snare injuries in Zimbabwe, veterinarian services were set up to treat Black rhino there. Monitoring the rhino with ear notching horn transmitters etc has made it safer to translocate the rhino.
African black rhinos were known to be plentiful throughout the sub-saharan area of Africa. But in 1970 these individuals began to decline severely. By 1992 the population landed to a mere 2300. Increased security, anti-poaching efforts stepped up both have allowed for increases in some population over the last ten years in about seven countries.
White rhinos are now able to say they’ve increased their population to approx 11,000 and is strongly the most abundant species. With strong law enforcement, conservation management put in place the species has made a comeback from becoming extinct when only 100 were left in the wild. Reasons being the loss of habitat and illegal hunting. Good going, go white rhinos!
Sumatran rhinos have suffered the most over the past 15 years. Decreasing in population by over 50% this species has only about 300 surviving members. The Sumatran rhino are mostly found in Indonesia and Malaysia. Lack of breeding areas are blamed for this demise. Fragmented population in parts of Asia and Africa can also be responsible.
Fun Fact: $250,000 per year is required to protect Sumatran Rhino excluding food, fencing or medicines.
Temptation by consumers to purchase medicinal remedies, collectors purchasing dagger handles etc are all fuels to aid the poachers keeping this ongoing plight of the rhino. Continued effort from all of our customers and our new visitors owning our mission, ‘Saving rhinos, one species at a time’. The protection of these most misunderstood animals is our goal
We hope you enjoyed this issue of our gnusletter, and keep on charging!
